Work on Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie[]

Bear McCreary have admitted before that he is a big fan of James Rolfe and the Angry Video Game Nerd webshow. When McCreary reached out to Rolfe to ask if he could help coming up with some original music for the show, he got an email back that said he could "submit a theme song cover to this email address." McCreary wrote back, insisting on writing an original score for Rolfe. After going back and forth through email, Rolfe eventually sent McCreary the rough cut of his 2010 AVGN Christmas special, which was made a parody of the old Chuck Jones cartoon adaptation of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas and McCreary said yes to creating a score for the episode. McCreary had found some time between his work on Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead, and he quickly came up with a score that had jazz and 8-bit tunes. He also took lyrics that Rolfe had written and his friend, a singer and musician named Doug Lacy, perform the song. Rolfe have talked about how with music you mostly get either quality or speed, and in his opinion McCreary gave him both. Eventually, when it came time to film Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie, Rolfe approached McCreary about composing the music for the film, to which he said yes. McCreary found inspiration for the main theme song in John WIlliams' scores, especially the theme song to Indiana Jones, titled "The Raiders' March". He also found inspiration for the music in one of his own projects, Dark Void Zero, which he had written and produced modern, updated 8 and 16-bit pieces for. The film also features rock jams writen and performed by Brendan McCreary and his band. Bear McCreary was not given a lot of time to work on the music for the film, and in the short timeframe he had he came up with a surprisingly grand and elaborate score that he is quite proud of, especially as it let him live out a lot of his dreams musically and just go all out. McCreary reworked the music slightly, improving and making the score bigger in time for the video-on-demand, DVD and Blu-ray releases of the film.
